5th Grade

Hello Kohl Colts! Welcome to 5th grade! My name is Abby Nelson, and I am thrilled to be at Kohl this year and can't wait to meet you! I am from Broomfield, CO and as a kid attended and graduated from Aspen Creek and Broomfield High School. I graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Theatre. I love teaching because helping children grow is incredibly rewarding. I know this year will bring lots of learning, excitement, and growth for all of us. Some things I love outside of teaching include music, singing, Disney, theatre, crafts, cheerleading, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. In college, I was involved in many clubs and had many leadership roles in the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma, and I also traveled to 13 countries through Semester at Sea. In my free time, I travel, go to musicals, and coach cheerleading to kids with disabilities! I am so excited for this year!

I am so excited to teach 5th grade again this year at Kohl! Before joining the Kohl Colts 5th grade team in 2021, I did intervention work in grades K-5 and I have also previously taught 2nd grade.

I grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and went to graduate school in Boston, Massachusetts before settling here in Colorado 15 years ago. I have a master’s degree in teaching from Simmons University, as well as a second MA in gender/ cultural studies. I also have a BA in psychology from the University of Nebraska.

I consider myself a lifelong learner and have taken courses beyond my two master's degrees in restorative justice, the science of reading, social-emotional learning, phonics instruction, and more. When I’m not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family. My son recently made the transition to middle school, and my husband is a high school principal at a BVSD charter school.
